Among the River Sallows is a collection inspired by the poetics of rural America. I draw visuals from the resilient characters that represent a tableau of the forlorn landscapes of Pennsylvania and upstate New York in which I grew up. The derelict farming towns of northern America offer a monochromatic color scheme that imbues a sense of subjective emotion. I am inspired by the adaptability that indwells as a second nature in rural living, this informed the ways in which I approached sourcing, dyeing, knitting, and cutting the fabric for my collection.
The essence of Among the River Sallows is the beauty of decay, the passage of time, and slowing down. Embracing patina, rust, stains, and imperfection is a key element in my work.
The title Among the River Sallows comes from the John Keats poem “To Autumn”. The poem praises the changing seasons, describing nature's abundance, harvest, decay, and rebirth over time.
